Housestaff have many opportunities to expand their knowledge through rounds and conferences planned by the Department of Pediatrics and other departments throughout the College of Medicine and The University of Arizona.
Teaching Day
- Three hours of protected educational time for all pediatric residents every Wednesday.
- 1st hour – Resident lecture. Pediatric housestaff present problem patients, clinicopathological conferences (CPCs), or comprehensive reviews of topics of their choice. Residents also gain valuable experience in lecture preparation and public speaking in a friendly environment.
- 2nd hour – Specialty lecture. Faculty provide in-depth information on a variety of topics and issues specific to their subspecialty. From July through September, Emergency Series lectures are presented, providing residents with up-to-date information on management of medical and surgical emergencies.
- 3rd hour – a variety of conferences are presented, including the Resident Enrichment Series (interactive conferences which provide residents the skills to teach in both informal and formal settings, provide feedback and maximize efficiency), Board Review, Journal club, Morbidity and Mortality conference, Tumor Board (Hematologist/Oncologist specialists present cases), or Housestaff Meeting.
- Attendings cover wards and clinic and chief residents cover pagers during Teaching Day.
- Lunch is provided!
Pediatrics/Emergency Medicine Study Group
- First Wednesday of each month
- One-hour review of patients and timely topics at UPH (Kino) Medical Center
Residents on Kino clinic month give informal topic talks of their choice each morning before clinic.
Residents on NICU month have 1 hour protected teaching time twice a week with the neonatal intensivists.
Residents on Nursery month have protected time with the SIM baby once a week--an excellent opportunity to practice a wide variety of neonatal procedures and code situations.
Residents on PICU month (both at UMC and TMC) have 1 hour protected teaching time with the PICU intensivists one afternoon per week to cover interesting cases or ICU topics.
Residents in continuity clinic receive weekly teaching sessions providing basic information in areas of well-child care, including developmental and preventive pediatrics.
Pediatric Emergency Medicine conference is presented once a month during the Emergency Medicine department teaching day--pediatric residents on UMC wards, clinic and elective months are encouraged to attend.
Morning Report is held three times weekly at University Medical Center and Tucson Medical Center. Students, housestaff and faculty from Pediatrics discuss interesting and complex patients.
Pediatric Grand Rounds is a weekly hour long lecture which focuses on current developments in the field of Pediatrics and is presented by local and visiting experts.
Pediatric Journal Club Residents critically review journal articles utilizing an evidence-based medicine (EBM) approach. Discussion of statistical methods relevant to the study also occurs. An EBM search engine is also available.
Pedcasts on diverse topics A to Z (from allergy to zoonoses) are provided by pediatric faculty. |
