Resident Guide for Leading Journal Club

4 Weeks Prior to Journal Club

    Identify Article for discussion & learning objectives for the session:
        Sign into New Innovations & Locate Journal Club area

      B.  Check month of your assigned Journal Club

              i. Locate pdf file of Article

            ii. Utilize Resources for EBM topic as needed

BY 2 Weeks Prior to Journal Club

    Review article & arrange meeting with your faculty facilitator:
        Identify type of article you are reviewing, e.g. treatment, diagnosis, or guideline.
        Use assessment template found under EBM Tools appropriate for the type of article you are reviewing. Link:  http://www.ebm.med.ualberta.ca/

            C. Identify & meet with your faculty advisor.

                     a. Your faculty facilitator is listed on the schedule in New Innovations

                         for your Journal Club session.

                     b. Review your article and plans for your session with your faculty

                         facilitator

         c. Review roles, topics to highlight, and choice of Journal Club Learning

            Activity to be completed during your session.

                      NO LATER Than 1 Week (7 days!) Prior to Journal Club

      III.       Email all residents, prepare your presentation & send to your faculty

                  facilitator for review.

                  A.    Send out copy of your article to all residents:

                            Email must contain:

                                          1. Clinical scenario pertinent to study in PICO format.

                                    2. Mention of EBM/Critical Review topic to highlighted, e.g.

                                        Power, Effect size, clinical practice guidelines, Case-Control

                                        studies, etc.

                                          3. PDF of article as attachment.

                    B. Your presentation:

   1. Begin with Clinical Question (PICO)

   2. Review pertinent aspects of article sufficiently so that someone who didn’t

       read article can follow the discussion.

   3. Interpret findings in context of what is known, which might require additional

       citations.

   4. Return to Clinical Question & open for discussion.  Be prepared with

       questions to prompt discussion among your colleagues.

 

        Week of Journal Club

    Journal Club session
        Bring appropriate numbers of handouts & worksheets for entire group.
        Bring zip drive or CD with your presentation.
        Assist with Journal Club Learning Activity as planned with your Faculty Facilitator.
