Electives
All residents must complete (9) nine blocks of subspecialty experiences, including one required block of adolescent medicine, one required block of developmental-behavioral pediatrics, and two required blocks of pediatric hematology and oncology. The electives noted with an asterisk are offered by the program and must be performed at the program’s home institution. All others may be performed off-site.
Group A electives
Of the remaining five (5) blocks, each resident must complete a minimum of (3) three different block rotations taken from Group A electives in different subspecialties. The inpatient/ outpatient mix should reflect the standard of practice for the subspecialty, and each block must be (4)four consecutive weeks in that subspecialty.
Group B electives
The additional two (2) blocks may consist of single subspecialties or combinations of specialties from either the Group A or Group B electives. Combinations of subspecialties may be structured as block or longitudinal experiences and, where appropriate, may be combinations of inpatient and outpatient experiences or all outpatient.
Group C Electives
Electives should be designed to enrich the educational experience of residents in alignment with their needs, interests, and/or future professional plans. While these electives do not fulfill ACGME graduation requirements, they do fulfill program requirements for graduation. Electives must be well-constructed, purposeful, and effective learning experiences, with written goals and objectives. The choice of electives must be made with the advice and approval of the program director and the appropriate preceptor.
